We caught up with Lucy Kuhar, founder of Lumin Architects, to learn more about her journey into architecture and how her passion for design has shaped her career.

We are very happy to have you as a member of We Are Harpenden. We would love to hear about your journey, have you always wanted to be an architect? Did you do something different before?

Thank you! I’ve always been drawn to architecture because it’s the perfect blend of logic, problem-solving, and creativity. I studied architecture back home in Slovenia and originally came to London for a three-month internship—12 years later, I’m still here! For the past seven years, I’ve been running my own practice, Lumin Architects, creating beautiful, functional homes for families who want something truly special.

When people come to you what is their main goal?

Most of my clients want to create a home that not only looks stunning but is deeply personal—something that truly enhances their lifestyle. Whether they’re extending, reconfiguring, or building from scratch, they want a home that works for their family’s day-to-day life while also being energy-efficient and built to last.

What is your favourite thing about running a business in Harpenden?

Harpenden has such a strong community feel—people are supportive, ambitious, and have a real appreciation for quality design and sustainability, which aligns perfectly with my values. I’m excited to bring my expertise to the area and help families create homes that truly enhance their lives.

What would you say is the most important thing for your clients to feel after you have done your work?

I love it when clients say, "Wow, we never knew this was possible!" My goal is to unlock the full potential of their home in a way that feels effortless, natural, and perfectly suited to their family.

Is there anything that people feel particularly surprised by when it comes to redesigning their space?

Many people don’t realise that design isn’t a straight path—it’s an evolving process. My job is to guide them through it, helping to balance aspirations with budget, planning and logistics while keeping the experience as smooth as possible.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

A happy client, without a doubt. When someone tells me their home feels completely ‘them,’ that’s the best part. Sometimes, clients even become friends, which makes it even more special.

If you had to give one piece of advice to someone who was redesigning their home, what would it be?

Know your family, know your routines and be honest about what works (and doesn’t!) in your current home. People often focus on their dream Pinterest boards but understanding how you live day-to-day is what truly leads to a design that works.

What inspires you when designing a home?

Every project is different, but my biggest inspiration always comes from my clients—how they live, what makes them feel at home, and what excites them about the future. I also love taking cues from the surrounding landscape, using natural materials, and ensuring every design feels timeless rather than trend driven.

What are the biggest benefits you see in your customers' lives?

A home that’s not just beautiful but designed for them—one that makes everyday life easier, more enjoyable, and future-proof for their growing needs.

Sustainability is a big focus for many families now—how do you incorporate it into your designs?

Sustainability isn’t just about solar panels and heat pumps (although those are great!). It’s about designing a home that works efficiently, maximises natural light, and uses high-quality materials that will last for generations. I take a holistic approach—considering energy efficiency, air quality, and how a space can evolve with a family over time—so that sustainability feels seamless rather than an afterthought.

Looking forward, is there anything you are particularly excited about? Are there any plans you can share with us?

After taking some time off for maternity leave, I’m excited about some fantastic projects this year. I’m also expanding my expertise in sustainable design and working towards my WELL certification to create even healthier, more energy-efficient homes.

Where in Harpenden is your favourite spot to go in your spare time?

Brad & Dills for the best coffee, Oddfellows Arms for a relaxed drink with a bit of character, or Silver Palate Deli when I need a little taste of Europe. And of course, Rothamsted Park is perfect for a peaceful dog walk.

Finally, Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I love boxing as a workout—it’s a great way to clear my mind, stay focused, and release energy. I also incorporate breathwork into my routine—it helps me stay grounded and brings a sense of balance, whether I’m in the middle of a busy project or just taking a moment to reset.
